NEWS BRIEF
Credit reporting giant TransUnion confirmed that it suffered a data breach affecting the personal information of more than 4 million customers.
The company's "cyber incident" occurred July 28 and was discovered two days later. It involved a third-party application assisting TransUnion's US customer support operations in which an unauthorized actor was able to gain access to personal information belonging to customers.
The information included in the breach wasn't specified in the notification letter included in the breach filing to the Maine Attorney General but was "limited to specific data elements" and didn't include credit reports or core credit information.
Now TransUnion is offering impacted customers access to two years of myTrueIdentity online credit monitoring services, a standard piece of recompense from financial service companies that have suffered breaches involving customer data.
Other recent breaches include Farmers Insurance and its affiliated companies and subsidiaries, which also fell victim to a "security incident" through a third-party vendor. Over 1 million customers were affected in a breach in late May.
Allianz Life, a subsidiary of Allianz, also experienced a data breach in July, in which hackers stole the personal data of around 1.1 million customers, according to Have I Been Pwned, an online resource for users affected by a data breach.
In TransUnion's case, it remains unclear who the threat actor was or if there's any correlation between its breach and other recent security incidents.
